Of all the great Rolex professional watches, none has had a more complicated relationship with its own era than the Milgauss. Born for scientists, ignored by the public, discontinued, reborn, discontinued again, and now, permanently closed, with no replacement in sight. The Milgauss is a watch that the market consistently failed to appreciate until it was too late. That pattern, so familiar in vintage Rolex collecting, is now fully in play. The sketch took him approximately five minutes. What he drew became the Patek Philippe Nautilus, and fifty years later, it remains the single most coveted watch in the world. This is the story of how that happened.
